Tuning the World
The Life and Teaching of Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan
A Weekend Seminar with Sharif Munawwir Graham, recorded May 8-9 2010
Born in 1882, Hazrat Inayat Khan was a virtuoso master of Indian music and Sufi who boldly traveled to the
West to perform and teach in the USA and Europe. He brought the universal Sufi Message to the world, and
he has touched the hearts of countless devotees.
Donald A. Sharif Graham, a professor of Literature and Comparative Religion, first encountered
Sufi Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan in 1970 and worked closely
with him on several of his books.
For twelve years, as archivist of the
Nekbakht Foundation
in Suresnes, France, he authenticated and edited the lectures of Pir-o- Murshid
Inayat Khan, and regularly gave seminars on Inayat Khan's teachings.
In 2010, Sharif spoke to a group in California about Inayat Khan. In fulfillment of a long-overdue promise these
recorded lectures, lightly edited, are now being posted in their
entirety, as intended by the speaker. Vast gratitude
to Mahdia Jacobs Kahn, Shams Karys and Leonard Levis for arranging and hosting, and to Pir Shabda
for recording.
During the two days of talks, Sharif showed and described numerous photographs of Murshid, from age about 12
onward. You can view these photos and
more here while listening to the talks online.

(From the announcement of the seminar in 2010)
Sharif was raised in Arizona, educated at Yale, taught comparative religion for 30 years, and
was initiated by Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan in 1970. He has been working on the Complete Works of
Pir-o-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan, the tenth volume of which approaches completion, since 1982.
His position at the official archives outside Paris involves continuous immersion in Inayat
Khan's words, and he has started writing a biography of Inayat Khan. This is Sharif's first
visit to the Bay Area in over 20 years.
"I will survey the life of Inayat Khan from his Indian childhood to his death, including many
examples of his teaching and the stories he would tell. I will show photos of him and relay
stories people told about meeting him. I especially enjoy answering questions about the life
and teachings of Inayat Khan, who I believe to have been the most important religious thinker
of the 20th century.
