Joan is the director and co-founder of Sur Laya Sangam Study Center for Indian Devotional Music, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization of California. Sangeeta serves on its board. Both are active practitioners of Indian vocal music.

The Song of the Ninety-Nine Beautiful Names of Allah (al-wazifa) is in the Arabic language. Each letter represents a sound quality, a phase of the moon, a perfume, and a vibration of the heart. Each letter is a key that opens a spiritual station (maqam), designed to lift the human soul toward the Divine Beloved.

This class will be a step-by-step program for English speakers to gain a precise pronunciation of the Arabic Names of God and the Qur'an. This is called eloquence (fasih) or tongue of the nightingale (bulbul).

The program is designed for beginners as well as those who have an intermediate knowledge of Arabic writing and sound system.

The class starts March 8

Hayat Stadlinger (April 6, 1900 - March 13, 1994), one of Murshid Inayat's beloveds, lived a life steeped in spirit and touched many hearts, keeping the tradition of Universal Worship alive at her Oakland home well into the 1980's. She would often recount her time with Murshid at the last summer camp in Suresnes in 1926 as a turning point in her life.

Now, 16 years after her passing, there will be a special celebration to commemorate Hayat on Sunday, March 14, 2010:

2:00 - 4:00 - Universal Worship at Grace North Church (2138 Cedar St., Berkeley 94709), followed by musical offerings

4:00 - 7:00 - Tea, sharing stories and images of Hayat, more music, vegetarian potluck supper at the nearby home of Marilee and Lenny Levis (754 Coventry Rd., Kensington 94707)

Imam Bilal Hyde will be sharing meditation techniques, based on Chisti and other Sufi traditions. These techniques guide through different subtle mystical levels, based on the seven levels of the soul. Imam Bilal suggests practices to work with each week; we often share the results of the practices in the class. Support increases remembrance and presence.

We are willing to tape this course for those at a distance, but want them to know that there is a great deal of practice and discussion involved.
